Subject: Grant Proposal for Funding Solar Schools Project in Nevada

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

SUNRISE (SSRG) Is a Nevada non-profit corporation formed in 1996. The mission of SSRG is to advance the use of renewable energy resources in the State of Nevada through public education.

SSRG is developing a program to educate Nevada school students (grades 6-12) in the field of renewable energy. This will be done as a joint venture with EcoSage Corporation, a Vermont educational services company. EcoSage Corporation has developed an innovative, Internet-based educational program - SolarQuest - for schools seeking to participate in the President's Million Solar Roofs Initiative.

SSRG will manage the initial introduction of SolarQuest in the State of Nevada as a local program partner. Program management will include the direct delivery of educational services, supervision of student interns supporting SolarQuest in the schools, delivery of a written report/critique of each phase of the program, and assistance in additional fund raising to cover future equipment purchases and education services in this area.

SSRG will receive support from EcoSage Corporation to provide Internet-based educational services to schools through the SolarQuest web site, and will receive direct management and training, including the development of SSRG industry sponsorship.

REQUEST FOR FUNDS

SSRG is requesting funds in the amount of $15,100 for a SolarQuest pilot project in a public school system in the State of Nevada, to be attended by schools in the district as well as from selected districts nearby. The pilot project will be conducted in three phases:

Phase One (Fall 1998 to Approval Date + 3 months):
SSRG will select a school district in the State to implement the SolarQuest program on a test basis for SSRG orientation and training. The pilot project will consist of an introduction to the SolarQuest curriculum, and construction of a mobile education station by students and teachers consisting of a small trailer, a fully operational PhotoVoltaic solar electric system, and an "Electrathon" vehicle (see attachments).

Phase Two (Phase 1 - April 1999):
SSRG, with the assistance of EcoSage Corporation, will display the renewable energy education station at other schools within the pilot district and at other community events, which will culminate with a display at a prominent location (to be selected) for the April Earth Day Celebration.

Phase Three (Phase 1 - April 1999):
EcoSage Corporation will provide Nevada schools with access to the SolarQuest web site for participation in the SolarQuest program. The program will end on Earth Day 1999 with the presentation of Awards for student participation and accomplishments.

Phase Four (May 1999):
SSRG will author two reports: 1) to review and assess the pilot program; and 2) to discuss the extension of this pilot program to other school districts in the State of Nevada.

USE OF FUNDS

The use of funds will be as follows:

Phase One, Mobile Education Station:
SSRG will utilize $12,600 to purchase a small utility trailer, a 300 watt PhotoVoltaic (PV) electric system with battery storage, a power-line carrier and PV monitoring system, an Electrathon vehicle kit for assembly by the SSRG selected pilot school, and to hire personnel to conduct the student/teacher workshop. The amount of $500 has been proposed for the services of one or more University of Nevada - Reno (UNR) Engineering student interns during the workshop.

Phase Two, Tour to display the education station:
SSRG will utilize $1,000 for direct expenses. Labor will be voluntary.

Phase Three, School Access to SolarQuest Web Site:
This will be a part of EcoSage Corporation's contribution to the project.

Phase Four, Reports:
SSRG will utilize $1,000 for expenses and services to be provided by a member of SSRG to prepare a report -- Review, Assessment, and Extension of the program.
