Melissa Taylor is a representative for Community Lead Education and Reduction Corps (CLEARCorps). This is a program funded by AmeriCorps; workers are paid a $4,725 living wage at the end of their term. They specialize in preventing lead poison in children by removing lead based paints from low income households. They also educate people to make them more cognizant of the effects of lead. Before 1954 most paints contained 50% lead. This was because lead was more durable and kept the color in the paint. In 1954 lead was only to be used in one percent of paint. In 1978 lead was banned completely from paint. Gasoline also contained high amounts of lead at one time. Although lead is banned from most products, one in four childern in the Pittsburg area are contaminated with lead. Contact your local EPA or health department offices today to see what you can do to prevent and educate yourself about the dangers of lead poison.
