On Monday, May 3, 1999 we had the opportunity to speak with the National President of the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) of the USA, Alexine Clement Jackson. She was a part of the kick-off plenary sessions, and her involvement interested us so much that we begged to talk to her. Well, it worked and she was wonderful. We caught her right as she was leaving the stage, but she was more than willing to spend a few minutes with us. We spoke with her a little about how she got involved in the YWCA, to which she told us “I’m what I call, a third generation YWCA!” Her grandmother and her mother we also members of the YWCA down south, at her grandmother’s time though there were still segregated chapters. She also spoke to us about the fact that women only own 1% of the worlds possessions. At first we all questioned her on this, but she then proved her information to be true. That fact may not be totally true for the average American women, but because of the way people live in other countries and there beliefs in what women can and can’t do, this does prove to be true. She also shared with us a little about how women over seas do all of the house work, all of the farming, and raise the children while their husbands try to find work. I truly enjoyed speaking with Alexine, her enthusiasm and incredible warmth truly showed through.
