Subject: meeting summary
[Response to Jock's message by Allan are in Brackets.]

Please let me know if this is an accurate summary of what we discussed: We agreed that:

1] it would be useful to build a complete working prototype.

[Yes, our intention is to fast-tract the development of this unit. No specific timeline has been set, however, our target date is September 30, 1999.]

2] prototype might be able to get funded with money from DoE's Solar Education funds.

[Yes. The status of that funding is unclear. I hope to contact DOE in the next day or two to verify the RFP status. I will contact you as soon as I have information or if I need help with additional DOE contacts.]

3] this could be combined with NREL's asking us for a proposal for First Nations Peoples;

[Yes.]

4] build the prototype near a National Lab -- either NREL or Sandia;

[Yes. Near NREL may be a better location. We have a program partner with federal funds for PV programs in schools. I will contact them this week regarding a clarification of their funds.]

5] to be constructed by First Nation students at a high school / jr. college.

[Yes, but with the understanding that we need to locate the activity near a school or college with the appropriate facilities, including technology lab, CAD software, and appropriate fabrication equipment.]

6] Final destination of the unit would be a First Nation site.

[Yes.]

7] Try to work this into Welfare to Work and/or AmericaCorps programs and to enlist the support of Eli Segal who ran both of the above.

[Yes. I am a strong supporter of this concept, as per our discussion of my previous work. This approach also supports a "family-learning" model which would be important considering the economic development goals.]

8] Try to get the involvement of The Nature Conservancy if they like the prototype

[Yes. More emphasis needs to be placed on the relationship of economic wealth and protection of the environment.]

9] Goals of the prototype project would be to: a] build a full working prototype for delivery & installation b] develop a complete set of construction guides c] develop a complete curriculum d] teacher training

[One additional goal I would like to see is to develop a unit for display purposes. Perhaps we could build two prototypes, one to deploy and one to display at events around the country for program marketing.]

The goal is to have, in the end, everything needed to clone this first effort to as many schools as possible. A complete and tested program with all required support materials. We also discussed working with Bob Tinker at www.concord.org -- they have many years of experience in educational technology and an award winning virtual high school program. They are in Concord, MA. In addition I mentioned Dr. Janet Poley of ADEC and Kathy Rutkowski as educational and distance learning experts we rely upon.

[Yes. Our revenues rely upon utilizing the SolarQuest Virtual Schoolhouse in our educational programs. We certainly can learn from others, improve our distance learning capacity, and work collaboratively to support mutual objectives.]

We agreed that any relationship we developed would be collaborative and non exclusive.

[Yes. As I referenced in the draft forwarded to you previously, we will move forward to develop this concept with an MOU. We would feel secure with our investment of time and money to have an exclusive agreement for a school-based program. Ron and I would like to have this written into the MOU.]

I look forward to hearing from you with your comments, suggestions and recommendations.

[I will expand on this reply once I have had the opportunity to speak with Ron when he gets on the ground in Santa Cruz.]

Regards, Jock

[Thanks for the timely meeting review, Allan]
