Empower the Voices of American Students
at the
National Town Meeting for a Sustainable America.

Is sustainability an area of study in your local school science, math, history, social studies, or government classes? Here is an ideal opportunity to introduce students to this important interdisciplinary field of study:

The President’s Council on Sustainable Development and the Global Environment and Technology Foundation will be co-sponsoring a National Town Meeting for a Sustainable America in Detroit, Michigan, on May 2 – 5, 1999. The National Town Meeting will focus on the Goals, Themes, and Strategies necessary for America to make the transformation to a sustainable society as we enter the 21st Century. The program will feature over 100 educational programs, highlight best practices, and present case studies of communities throughout the nation working to achieve sustainability.

“Participate in the National Youth Roundtable!”

Empower the voices of American students to be heard at the National Youth Roundtable. From 8:30 to 10:00 on the morning of May 2, 1999, the National Town Meeting will feature a Youth Roundtable consisting of twenty leaders ages 12 – 18 that have demonstrated commitment to the values defined in the President’s Council on Sustainable Development “Goals” statement. The Youth Roundtable delegates have been nominated by leading national youth organizations and selected by a panel of judges. The delegates will represent America’s youth at this important gathering of leaders in government, industry, and education. Beginning April 12, 1999, biographies of selected youth delegates will be posted to the SolarQuest web site. Students across America can begin a dialogue with the delegates or post their vision of sustainability to the SolarQuest Virtual Schoolhouse. The delegates will voice the concerns and vision of America’s Youth at the Roundtable and in a report to President Clinton following the National Town Meeting.

“How can schools participate?”

The are several ways schools can participate in the National Town Meeting. As a class teacher, parent, or volunteer, you can introduce the National Town Meeting as a classroom activity. Discuss what sustainability means to them! Have students write about their vision of sustainability and post it as a report to the National Youth Delegates on the SolarQuest Virtual Schoolhouse. Also, from May 2-5 SolarQuest will provide a web cast of the National Town Meeting, including a student news broadcast from the floor of the NTM. For Schoolhouse registration information and broadcast schedules, please visit the SolarQuest homepage.

“Where can I find out about curriculum on sustainability for my classroom?”

The SolarQuest Virtual Schoolhouse provides a free Curriculum Resource Guide based on the National Goals for Sustainable Development. The Curriculum Resource Guide includes case studies on sustainable development practices, links to Internet resources, lesson plans, professional development resources, Internet-based classroom activities, and more.

Join us in the “Journey to Detroit,” and empower the nation’s students to create a sustainable vision for America!
