Wow!

What a great pair, these two from Charm City:

Kellie, who lives in a town-house just north of old Memorial Stadium in
a neighborhood called Edmor Gardens, has a cool 15-year-old look whose
smartness is only surpassed by her intelligence! Melinda's a bit less
sophisticated in her appearance, contrasting to Kellie's dark brown
complexion and black eyes with her long dark hair and Oriental features,
but she's obviously just as keen-minded and very much an individualist
in her thinking. I enjoyed being with these two, a sophomore and a
freshman from Western High whose enrollment is open to city students who
qualify for its college preparatory curriculum.

We ate at the Golden Temple, a health food store and cafe, suggested by
Mrs. McLaughlin (whose Irish husband's name conveys the romance of two
international students, she from Taiwan, studying in the U.S. years
ago). The girls enjoyed choosing from the array of organic dishes
available, all three of us making such new discoveries as wheat bread
pizza!

The girls shared their enthusiasm working on environmental projects
about which they wrote in their essays for NTM. When I explained what
kind of writing they would be doing on the INET-News team, they
suggested that they rewrite their essays as a journalistic report to go
out on the internet and send it to me for critique. I thought this was
would be very good practice for us three, and was pleased to have the
idea come from them. We exhanged e-mail addresses, adding them to a
sheet of names and addresses I had compiled and we agreed to be in
contact.

I acquainted the girls with Solarquest about which they weren't familiar
and with our hope for promoting participation by schools and students
who could participate in the NTM --and further projects such as
solarquest--via the internet. They agreed to a press conference which I
will attempt to set up, and we hoped it might include the other young
women delegates from Maryland. We think that Western High is the best
setting for such a press conference.

The phone at Jessica's home is not answered, so that I suspect the
family may be away for post-Easter vacation week. Heavenly and I talked
this evening, and I'll mail her the info sheet we Baltimore three put
together. She does not have e-mail and says that she will soon be able
to get back on the internet with her home pc, opportunity which hasn't
been possible recently.

I'm wondering if Karen could set up a press conference with Heavenly
since they are located close together and that might produce news
releases in two different areas. Let's talk about this Karen. You might
also contact Heavenly's mentors (Capital Hts.) in that area's
environmental projects as I am trying to do with the names of mentors
and coordinators I've learned about through Melinda and Kellie. One or
more of them in a press conference talking about their student
projects? The girls seem very enthusiastic about their "mentors" who
have encouraged their interest and work on environmental projects.

Pulled a booboo so I've lost the info sheet composed in wp on my pc so
I'd rather fax the printed document to Alan, Karen, and Maria if you
could give me fax numbers please.

So if the other 18 are as interesting as these two, and of course they
are, it will be a fun week!
