The purpose of this schoolhouse is to learn all about hydroelectric power. While hydroelectric power is "renewable," not everyone thinks of dams as benign. One of the quests will be to prepare an environmental impact for a dam near your school. Before you do so, let's learn a bit about the problems that some people have experienced with dams in their area, so you will know what to look for, and be better prepared to assess environmental impacts. At the website listed above, or in the November 1998 issue of Smithsonian magazine, read "The Battle of the Dams ... Those who think some of our rivers are a dammed shame argue for the structures to come down," an article by Patrick Joseph.
