The students of Yoshino Chugakko will study the upcoming referendum on the fate of the proposed Daiju no Seki. This is a dam that the Construction Ministry wants to build approximately 15 kilometers from the mouth of the Yoshino River. There is currently a 200 year-old "barrage" at this site. This was built by local people to prevent the river from changing its channel to a former channel. The construction ministry has been planning on replacing this with a 10 meter high dam. The dam is designed to protect parts of the city of Tokushima from a projected 100-year flood. However, there is no certainty that this will work and, whether it does or not, it will destroy the ecosystem of the lower Yoshino River.
