South Africa and it's people are in the final stages of preparation as government officials, non-governmental organisations, multilateral development agencies and civil society groups begin to converge on Johannesburg for the start of the World Summit of Sustainable Development. It is with much excitement and anticipation that I too prepare to join in this momentous occasion to observe and engage in events happening in and around the Summit and to bring you news and views of those participating.
I am Anna Taylor, a second year student at the University of Cape Town studying a Bachelor of Science in Environmental and Geographical Science and Oceanography. It is with strong academic capabilities and a passion and concern for environmental and development issues that I approach the Summit, intrigued by the process and what the outcomes will be.
The aim of the Summit is to focus on issues of housing, water, sanitation, alternative forms of energy, health and economic security and to set realistic and achievable targets with definite timeframes to achieve progress within the framework of sustainable development.
My aim at the Summit will be to interact with a variety of people bringing you a who’s who at the Summit, what part they play in the events as well as in the larger context, and their views on various issues of interest. Also to witness key and parallel events, highlighting the major issues, discussions and decisions that arise during the week.
If we are to achieve a shift towards a less destructive path of development it is imperative that the information from this World Summit be disseminated to the public at large, because it is a fundamental shift in peoples way of thinking that is needed to initiate such a change. As important as it is for governments to make policy and NGOs to work at eradicating poverty it is the individual, equipped with knowledge and understanding, that can make a difference!
